If your puppy is going to poop more often, or you' ve noticed his stool became softer or changed normal color, it can be concerning. Diarrhea in puppies is uncomfortable and may signal serious issues. Let’s explore why this happens and how you can help.

Most Common Causes of Diarrhea ( by descending scale)

- Dietary Changes: A sudden change or new addition in food will upset your puppy's stomach.

- Infections and Parasites: Puppies are susceptible to various infections and parasites that can cause stomach upset.

- Excessive Treats: Overindulging in treats or human food can lead to stomach upset.

- Swallowed foreign object or bone: Puppies might ingest items that are not intended for their consumption.

- Allergies: Some puppies may have food allergies that lead to diarrhea.

- Stress: Moving, new people, or loud noises can stress out your puppy.

First Aid for Assisting Your Puppy

Now that we know what can cause diarrhea, let’s look at how to help your puppy:

1. Ensure Access to Water: Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so make sure your puppy always has fresh water available. If they aren’t drinking, try offering some low-sodium broth.

2. Gradually Change the Diet: If you suspect the food is the issue, revert to the old diet and gradually introduce the new one. This can help prevent stomach upset.

3. Create a Calm Environment: Provide your puppy with a cozy and quiet space to rest. Make sure there are no loud noises or sudden changes in the home that could frighten them.

4. Light Diet: Try offering your puppy a light diet, such as boiled chicken and over-cooked rice and rise water. This can help soothe their stomach and restore normal bowel function.

5. Probiotics: Consider adding probiotics to your puppy's diet ( for example Purina Forti-Flora sachets). They can help restore the normal gut flora.

6. Avoid Treats: Temporarily eliminate ALL POSSIBLE treats and human food to avoid overloading your puppy's stomach.

7. Monitor Symptoms: If diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours or is accompanied by other symptoms like vomiting or lethargy, be sure to consult a veterinarian.

If the issue is indigestion rather than an infection, Peptobismol for infants may be beneficial. The typical dosage is 1 ml per kilogram (1 ml per 2 lbs) of body weight, administered twice daily for 2-3 days. HOWEVER: Peptobismol should not be given to puppies under 2 lbs or younger than 3 months old.

#### Conclusion

Diarrhea in puppies can be a temporary issue, but it’s important to closely monitor your pet's condition. With love and care, you can help your puppy get through this uncomfortable period!
