Welcoming Your Chihuahua Puppy

One of the most common questions I receive is, “What do I actually need for my new puppy?”

To make your preparation easier, I’ve compiled my personal, trusted list of essentials—all products I use daily at World Class Chihuahuas for my own dogs. These recommendations come from firsthand experience and are tailored specifically for the needs of tiny breeds.

1. Food & Nutrition

A proper diet is the foundation of your puppy’s health. Here’s what I use and why:

  • Dry Food (Kibble): I consistently use ROYAL CANIN Small Puppy >>(click the link) formula. Similat to this - INDOOR Puppy same brand is ok too. It’s specially sized for small jaws and supports balanced growth.

  • A critical warning: AVOID the "X-Small" version! The pieces are dangerously tiny and can easily cause choking hazard, especially in fast-eating puppies—a risk I’ve witnessed firsthand.

    • Feeding Guide: Start with small, frequent meals to maintain energy.

      • 1-2 lbs: 1 teaspoon, 4 times daily.

      • 2-3 lbs: 1 tablespoon, 3 times daily.

      • 4-5 lbs: 2 tablespoons, 2 times daily.

Always adjust based on your individual puppy's activity and growth.

  • Wet Food: This is excellent for adding moisture and making meals more enticing.

    • Royal Canin Puppy Mousse: Its soft texture is ideal for weaning and picky eaters. I recommend serving about 1/3 of a can once a day or every other day, mixed with or separate from kibble.

    • For Older Puppies (14+ weeks): I switch to WELLNESS Canned Cat Food, such as the Chicken Dinner in Gravy. The 5 oz can is perfectly sized—your puppy will eat about 1/3 per meal, making it economical and fresh. This natural diet is highly palatable and nutritious.

Key Transition Tip: Sudden food changes can upset a puppy’s sensitive digestion. Stick with the recommended diet for the first 4 weeks after adoption to allow them to adjust. Any future transition must be done gradually over 7-10 days by slowly mixing in the new food with the old.

2. Playpens
Safety Essential

A playpen is not just a convenience—it’s a tool for safety and training.

  • It creates a secure “home base” where your puppy can play, eat, and sleep without getting into trouble, helping them feel confident in a new environment.

  • It is invaluable for potty training, as it allows you to manage their space effectively. I use different types:

3. Supplements & Treats

These additions support specific aspects of your puppy’s wellbeing:

  • High-Calorie Gel: An essential for preventing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), a common risk in toy breeds. Keep it on hand for travel, stress, or if your puppy seems lethargic. A small dose can quickly boost energy. This gel also helps while your puppy recovering after illness or sugery.

Safe Training & Chewing Treats:

Avoid raw meat treats and high-fat options like peanut butter for puppies, as they can be hard to digest.

Absolute Nos: Never feed chocolate, grapes/raisins, candy, onions, or heavily salted foods, as they are toxic to dogs.

4. Potty Training Setup

Consistency is key, and the right tools make all the difference.

  • Litter Pan/Tray: I might be recommend, especially for male Chihuahuas. It contains accidents neatly, protects your floors, and gives your puppy a consistent, dedicated bathroom spot, speeding up the house-training process.

  • Pee Pads:

    • Disposable Pads: M or L size, use these inside the playpen or litter tray for easy cleanup.

    • Reusable/Washable Pads>>> A more economical and eco-friendly choice for puppies who tend to tear up or chew the disposable ones. They have a waterproof backing to protect your floors.

5. Feeding

  • Slow Feeder Bowl: If your puppy gulps food, this bowl is a must. Its maze-like design forces them to eat slower, which prevents choking, improves digestion, and can reduce bloating. Choose one with low, gentle ridges suitable for a tiny muzzle.

6.Comfort

  • Dog Bed: Prioritize easy cleaning. Beds with removable, machine-washable covers are ideal for accidents and regular hygiene. I avoid oversized, overly fluffy beds as they can harbor parasites and are difficult to clean thoroughly. For my long-haired Chis, smooth, cool fabrics are more comfortable than plush materials.

7. Travel Carriers

A secure carrier is vital for safe vet visits and outings. I prefer these styles for different situations: (click the link)

  • Puppy Sling Carrier>>>Keeps your pup snug against you, providing warmth and reducing anxiety. It’s perfect for short trips or when you need your hands free while ensuring your puppy feels secure.

  • Soft-Sided Carrier Bag>>> Offers more structured space for slightly longer journeys. Look for one with good ventilation, a secure zipper, and a comfortable handle or shoulder strap for easy carrying.

8. Deworming (Regular Parasite Prevention)

Maintaining a regular deworming schedule is crucial for your puppy's long-term health, as internal parasites are common and can affect their growth and digestion. For routine prevention, you can use broad-spectrum anthelmintic tablets available at pet stores or online pharmacies.

  • Product Example: Look for trusted over-the-counter brands like Drontal (Puppy)>>>or Panacur C (Fenbendazole). Always ensure the product is specifically labeled as safe for puppiesand for the weight range of your Chihuahua.

  • Application & Schedule: Administer the tablet according to the package instructions, and the puppy weight, usually with a small amount of food.

    • Puppies up to 8 months: Give a dose every month.

    • Dogs over 8 months: Switch to a preventative dose every 2 months as part of their ongoing care.

While these products are effective for routine prevention, they do not replace a veterinary examination. If you suspect a heavy parasite infestation (symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, bloated belly, or visible worms), a vet visit is essential for accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment. I always recommend consulting with your veterinarian to choose the most suitable product for your dog's specific lifestyle and health profile.

I hope this detailed guide gives you clarity and confidence as you prepare for your new companion. My commitment to you and your puppy doesn’t end at adoption. Whether your dog is young or grown, I’m always here to offer advice on nutrition, products, or any aspect of care.
